The 2022 season is underway ready for its biggest season yet, with a total of 22 races on the calendar. The new rules have shaken up the season and it seems Mercedes’s dominance is under pressure.
Ferrari’s Charles LeClerc is currently at the top of the driver standings, having finished in the top three of every race so far and winning the season opener in Bahrain and the Australian GP. Current World Champion Max Verstappen is sitting in second place, despite winning three of the first five races a DNF in Bahrain and Australia has left him behind in the rankings.
Thanks to the success of LeClerc Ferrari are leading the constructor’s championship, only six points ahead of Red Bull it looks like it will be a close race between the two teams this season.
Mercedes are currently third in the constructor’s championship, with George Russell finishing in the top five in every race so far. Russell has managed to out-perform teammate Lewis Hamilton during his first year with the team, as the seven-time World Champion has dropped to sixth place in the driver standings. The new rule changes have not been favorable for Mercedes, they are struggling with porpoising on the car and the best position they have managed so far is P3.
Another team that was hoping for a better year is McLaren. The team had issues with brake cooling problems during the first few races but looked to improve in Italy when Lando Norris made it to the podium. Unfortunately, the inaugural Miami GP was not for them as the car struggled around the new track and Norris got caught up in an incident on lap 41 with Pierre Gasly that ended both their races.

The Miami Grand Prix certainly put on a show and it will return in 2023 along with a new race in Las Vegas, as for this year we are about to head to the European leg of the season. Up next is Barcelona, a track many of the drivers will be familiar with as pre-season testing takes place here each year. McLaren will be hoping for a better result as they had a successful testing session at the start of the year. Following that is the infamous Monaco Grand Prix, Ferrari fans will want to see Charles LeClerc on the top step of the podium here as the Monegasque driver has had a string of bad luck at his home Grand Prix in the past.
