Look back at one of the greatest horse racing events on the calendar and enjoy some of the highlights from this year’s Grand National.
Grand Opening Day
Renamed as Liverpool’s NHS Day in honour of the heroic NHS staff across the region, day 1 of the festival featured a brilliant bill of racing, headlined by the Grade One Betway Bowl. Rachael Blackmore earned her first win at the Grand National with a victory in the Grade 2 mares’ bumper, this is coming off the back of a very successful week at Cheltenham last month. It was Sir Alex Ferguson’s horse that made headlines as Clan Des Obeaux won the Betway Bowl, the third Grade One win of the day for ex-Manchester United manager.
Ladies’ Day
Although we couldn’t be there to dress in our finery, Ladies’ Day at the Randox Health Grand National still gave us a fabulous day of racing. In the Betway Mildmay Novices’ Chase Chantry House won by 32 lengths after Espoir De Romay’s fall at the penultimate fence. This was Chantry House’s second Grade One victory in the last three weeks. Willie Mullins’ son, Patrick Mullins, got his first win at Aintree in the Grade Three Randox Topham Handicap Chase with Livelovelaugh. In the opening race of day two, the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3), the only Irish runner in a field of 22 won the race, Jack Kennedy raced to victory with Tronador and trainer Denise Foster.
Grand National Day
The main event, Grand National Day hosts the race the world stops to watch and anticipation was high for the final race of the festival. It was Rachael Blackmore who made history on the Saturday as she became the first female jockey to win the Grand National with Minella Times.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s just incredible. I just got such an unbelievable passage through the race. Minella Times just jumped fantastic and brought me from fence to fence.”
