History of Epsom Derby

One of the five longest-standing traditional flat races, the Derby Stakes was originally established following a celebration during the first running of the Oaks Stakes in 1779.

The Derby Festival is held in such high esteem that in 2012, the Queen chose to begin her diamond jubilee celebration at the event, thus confirming its status as one of the most popular occasions on the sporting calendar.
