What Are The Most Iconic British Grand Prix Moments at Silverstone?
The First Ever Formula 1 Race - 1950
Silverstone hosted the first official F1® world championship race in May 1950 - over 76 years ago. Back then, it was officially recognised as the Grand Prix d’Europe, the first time that title had been assigned to a circuit outside of Italy or France. The grid featured the Alfa Romeo superstars Nino Farina, Juan Manuel Fangio, Luigi Fagioli, and Reg Parnell. Adding to the era’s craziness, the grid also included Thai Prince Bira, Belgian jazz musician turned racing driver Johnny Claes, and Louis Chiron, whose name has been further immortalised through Bugatti’s hypercar. The race was dominated by the Alfa Romeo drivers, with Farina going on to win from pole position and later the first-ever F1 World Championship. His teammates, Fagioli and Parnell, helped Alfa Romeo lock out all podium positions despite Fangio’s retirement. This meant that the first Grand Prix at Silverstone featured a British Driver on the podium.Jim Clark’s Silverstone Swansong - 1967
Jumping forward to the 60s, the British Grand Prix had already seen its fair share of dramatic moments. Notably, Jim Clark’s performances helped turn Silverstone into the true temple of British motorsport. In 1967, with the revolutionary Lotus 49 and its brand-new Cosworth DFV engine, Clark delivered one of the most stunning and complete drives of his career. Calm, precise, and devastatingly quick, he dominated his home Grand Prix. Here, he showcased why many to this day regard him as one of the purest talents ever seen. This was his fifth and final win on home soil.Jackie Stewart’s Grit and Racecraft - 1969
The 1969 British Grand Prix was another exciting instalment that pitted Jackie Stewart in a fierce duel with Jochen Rindt. The pair showcased great overtakes for the lead and pushed each other over every braking point. At one point, Stewart was also seen warning Rindt about his car’s dangerous vibrations, showing how different the era’s racing culture was. After breaking away for the win, Stewart cemented his position as one of racing’s world-class drivers - fast, intelligent, and safety-minded. For everyone present, the race showcased everything Formula 1 racing should be about: wheel-to-wheel action, sportsmanship, and a home victor. This marked both his maiden British Grand Prix win and Formula 1 World championship (his first of three).Nigel Mansell, “Mansell Mania Explodes” - 1987
Before Hamilton, no other driver captured the home crowd’s raw emotion quite like Nigel Mansell. The 1987 British Grand Prix is still known as “Mansell Mania”. In the closing laps of the race with low fuel and running behind team-mate Nelson Piquet, Mansell launched a stunning dummy to overtake at Stowe and grabbed the lead. With a legendary career filled with many iconic moments, many may be surprised to learn that Ayrton Senna has only claimed one British Grand Prix victory. However, in true Senna fashion, his standout moment came in tricky, mixed conditions. Coming from third in his McLaren-Honda, Senna showcased mastery over the changing grip levels to the level that others on the grid couldn’t match. Among them was title rival Alain Prost, who dropped back and eventually retired. This wasn’t just a victory but a statement drive that swung the momentum in his favour and proved why he was so feared in the rain.Lewis Hamilton, King of Silverstone - 2008 to 2024
In the history of the British Grand Prix, no one is quite as synonymous with Silverstone as Lewis Hamilton. With nine victories, narrowing to just one iconic moment would be impossible. So here are examples of his dominance of the British Grand Prix:- 2008: marked both his first British Grand Prix win and Formula 1 world title. In torrential rain, he proved his mastery at a young age, starting in fourth and turning that into a victory by over a minute.
