Exciting Season Opener

We can’t wait for the start of the 2025-26 season. As always, the curtain raiser is the FA Community Shield. However, with this comes what feels like the most surprising matchup in a long, long time. Take us back a year, and it's hard to find anyone who predicted that both Liverpool and Crystal Palace would be the winners of the two biggest prizes in British football.  Liverpool, who were shocked by the sudden departure of the iconic Jurgen Klopp. Many at the start of the 2024-25 season predicted that they would struggle to fight for a top 4 finish. No one could’ve predicted that they would go on to win the Premier League comfortably.  Crystal Palace, on the other hand, finished 10th at the end of 2024. The 2023-24season didn’t quite build on the improvements seen over the past 3 seasons. Like Liverpool going into the 2024-25 season, no one could’ve predicted that their first FA Cup trophy would come against Manchester City and the seemingly unbeatable Pep Guardiola.  Take a look at why Liverpool v Crystal Palace promises to be an exciting Community Shield matchup.

Liverpool v Crystal Palace - Most Exciting Matches

September 1989 - Liverpool 9-0 Crystal Palace

Let's start with Liverpool’s largest ever top-flight win, and unfortunately, its Crystal Palace’s heaviest defeat. At the time, Crystal Palace were a newly promoted side, and yet, no one could’ve predicted the mauling they were about to experience at Anfield.  Liverpool had 8 different scorers on the day, with notable legends like Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley on the scoresheet. This was also the season when Liverpool last won a league title for 30 years until the 2020 season.

May 2014 - Crystal Palace 3-3 Liverpool

Liverpool fans, look away. This is probably the most memorable and exciting match between the two teams. Many consider this to be the nail in the coffin of Liverpool’s 2014 title hopes. Though chances were already bleak, especially after Liverpool’s 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea.  Liverpool held a commanding position throughout the game, with a 3-goal lead. Goals from Joe Allen, Luis Suarez, and an OG from Delaney made the win seem guaranteed. However, two quick goals from Dwight Gayle helped the Eagles complete a famous comeback that would help Manchester City lift the title.

May 2015 - Liverpool 1-3 Crystal Palace

Liverpool fans, continue to look away; this was Steven Gerrard’s last game at Anfield. The game wasn’t a fitting representation of the then-Liverpool captain’s legacy at the club.  Goals from Jason Puncheon, Wilfred Zaha, and Glenn Murray helped the Eagles overcome Adam Lallana’s opener. This helped Crystal Palace achieve their joint-best finish of tenth place, whilst Liverpool spiralled down to sixth place after the promising 2014 season.  This was the penultimate game of the 2025 season, where Liverpool finished sixth. Then-manager Brendan Rodgers would leave the club to be replaced by Jurgen Klopp.

January 2019 - Liverpool 4-3 Crystal Palace

5 years later, and here we go again. Liverpool is once again challenging for their first title in 29 years. Crystal Palace once again are threatening to put a spanner in the works.  Andros Townsend’s first-half goal increased the pressure, but this time, Liverpool were better-equipped to respond to the pressure. Liverpool’s front-three responded with two goals from Salah, and one apiece from Boby Firmino and Sadio Mane.  James Milner was sent off in the 89th minute, and Palace took their chance in the 95th minute courtesy of a goal from Max Meyer to make it 4-3. Liverpool were all too familiar with title-deciding draws with Crystal Palace but managed to hold on for the final two minutes.  Despite overcoming this potential tripping hazard, Liverpool would once again lose the title to Manchester City by a single point.

December 2020 - Crystal Palace 0-7 Liverpool

Liverpool finally became champions in the 2020 Premier League season. As champions, they came out in full force against a team known for being a thorn in their sides. Clinical goals from the front-three of Sadio Mane, Bobby Firmino (who added another in the second half), and Takumi Minamino in the first half.  Followed by a goal from Jordan Henderson, two goals from Mohammed Salah, who helped complete another mauling of the Eagles.  Both teams were left disappointed by their performance for the season. Liverpool fought hard to finish third but were left 17 points behind rivals and champions Manchester City. Crystal Palace, on the other hand, finished 14th, losing 3 of their final 5 games.
